The American Association of Finance and Accounting (AAFA) recently sat down with its Dallas, TX Affiliate, Unity Search Group, to learn more about Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas’ current market for accounting and finance professionals. Whether you are seeking to hire qualified accounting and finance talent or considering advancing your career, check out this month’s AAFA Industry Update!

Q: What hiring trends are you seeing in your local market?

A: The DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth) market for accounting and finance professionals remains very strong.  North Texas has continued to see a boom due to economic expansion and quite a few significant corporate relocations over the past 5 years.  We have seen a high demand for qualified accounting, finance, and tax professionals with 2 to 6 years of experience.  Additionally, there has been a lot of demand for small to mid-size company Controllers and CFO’s.  Candidates with past or present exposure to public accounting, corporate strategy, or investment banking as well as candidates with certifications continue to be of the highest demand.

Companies looking to hire in this competitive market are realizing that they need to move quickly through the hiring process to land the best talent who are more than likely considering multiple opportunities at one time.  Additionally, they are having to offer very competitive compensation packages to get quality people on board.

Q: What’s the reasoning behind these trends?

A: With all of the growth and corporate relocations, the competition level amongst companies for qualified talent is as high as we have ever seen in the DFW area.  Our local unemployment rate is near an all-time low, and candidates are able to be more selective when choosing their next opportunity.

Q: What are the high demand roles/qualifications?

A: The real estate and investment industries are white hot right now, and demand for candidates who have experience in those industries is very high.  Additionally, we are seeing a lot of demand for people who have healthcare, restaurant, distribution, and private equity experience.  Candidates with good job tenure and certifications are typically the most desired as well as anyone with a public accounting, corporate strategy, or investment banking foundation.

Q: What is the overall economic outlook for the DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth) area in the next 3-5 years?

A: There is a lot of bullish sentiment in the Dallas-Fort Worth area as to our local economic outlook.  North Texas remains very active in bidding for corporate relocations of other large international companies, and our strong talent pool, availability of affordable housing, lack of state income tax, and ability to offer strong tax incentives should keep our area as a strong contender whenever it bids on a corporate relocation.

Additionally, the Dallas-Fort Worth area is very diverse in terms of industry exposure.  As such, we are well positioned as a city to ride out economic cycles that impact different industries at different times.
